Who Be Gets The Guineas
By Elliot Dean
Whobegotyou has become the hottest 3 year old of the Melbourne Spring, taking out the $1 million Caulfield Guineas on Saturday in dominating fashion. The Mark Kavanagh-trained gelding was a worthy $3 pre-race favourite, storming home to win by over 3 lengths with Time Thief and Von Costa De Hero making up the placings.
At the top of the straight, Time Thief loomed up to the leaders and looked a likely winner for jockey Dwayne Dunn, however Whobegotyou simply motored past him to win comfortably. Carnero put in an eye-catching run for fifth and will now be a major contender for the Victoria Derby.
Bought for just $19,500, Whobegotyou was the cheapest horse in the Guineas field, but that didn't stop the rising star producing a faster time over the 1600 metres than the older horses ran in the Toorak Handicap earlier in the day. He is now one of the favourites for the $3 million Cox Plate, but Kavanagh is unlikely to enter him in the Australasian WFA championship.

In the Toorak Handicap, New Zealand colt Alamosa significantly boosted his stud prospects, winning the Group 1 event by nearly 2 lengths. After showing signs all campaign, the Mick Price-trained stallion finally broke through in Australia comfortably beating Rockwood, with Pillar Of Hercules running into third.
Alamosa may go on to contest the Cox Plate in a fortnight at Moonee Valley, but it is more likely he will line up in the Emirate Stakes 2 weeks later. Pillar Of Hercules will also contest the Emirates.
Danny O'Brien has again given himself two legitimate Caulfield Cup contenders, with outsider Douro Valley taking out the Yalumba Stakes against more fancied opposition. In a gutsy riding performance, jockey James Winks took Douro Valley to the lead at around the 800m mark, and after kicking in the straight, held on to beat favourite Pompeii Ruler by a neck. Dato Chin Nam Stakes winner Guillotine was only a half-head back in third.
Douro Valley joins stablemate Master O'Reilly as two of the favourites for next Saturday's Caulfield Cup. The Master showed he's in career best form with a super finishing 2nd in the Turnball Stakes last week.
Former Kiwi galloper C'est La Guerre has also shortened in the Caulfield Cup market, after coming home nicely in fourth spot. With the equal fastest final sectional of 11.88 seconds, he is also a major contender for the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cups.
