All The Good Wins Caulfield Cup

European Invader Too Good Against Locals

By Elliot Dean

The world's biggest racing stable has taken out the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, with Godolphin-trained All The Good surprising punters to the win the Group 1 event on Saturday.

The 50,000 strong crowd at Caulfield Racecourse went silent after the main race, disappointed that one of their heroes (a la Weekend Hussler, Master O'Reilly, Littorio) was not first past the post.

All The Good won by 3/4 of a length from New Zealander Nom Du Jeu with longshot Barbaricus holding on for third after leading most of the race.

"Jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who returned home from racing in Europe to ride for Godolphin, was clearly over the moon.

"I got caught three deep but I had cover the whole way and for an English horse he travelled really well and picked up nicely there when we turned for home," he said.

Fan favourite Weekend Hussler had a great run throughout, but could not finish off the race, suggesting the champion gelding cannot stay. It is likely owner Ross McDonald will spell him.

Last year's winner Master O'Reilly was looking to be the first back to back winner since Rising Fast in the 1950's. He was given a great run by jockey Vlad Duric but failed to kick on in the straight.

All The Good's run was an excellent Melbourne Cup trial, with the horse now among the favourites to take out the prestigious event on the first Tuesday in November.

Luca Cumani-trained Mad Rush, who finished an unlucky fourth on Saturday, is now the outright favourite for the Melbourne Cup. Cumani is hoping to go one better than last year, when Purple Moon finished second.

And with champion galloper Septimus settling in to Melbourne well, the Europeans have three very strong hopes to steal our Cup. The local hopes seem to rest on last year's winner Efficient, Littorio and Master O'Reilly.
