Who Be Stopping Him?
By Marcus Walta
Whobegotyou continued to live up to his 'hottest 3 year old of the Victorian Spring' tag with a dominating win in the AAMI Vase At Moonee Valley on Saturday. The Mark Kavanagh trained rising star was an impressive winner of the 2040m race, easing down in the last 100m to win by 1.3 lengths.
It immediately got tongues wagging that he should have been competing in the next 2040 event, the Tatts Cox Plate, however Kavanagh insisted all along that postponing any Cox run would be better for the horse's development.
Buffet, trained by Danny O'Brien, was gallant finishing in second place, and has come a long way in just his fourth race start. Another up and comer, Orca, came third. All three horses will continue onto the Victoria Derby with Whobegotyou expected to be odd-on for the 3 year old staying race.
The AAMI Vase winner has backed up a week later to win the Derby five times, with Efficient (NZ) (2006), Plastered (2004), Helenus (2004) and Blevic (1994) the most recent.
Whobegotyou's form has been amazing this Spring, with wins in the Group II Bill Stutt Stakes over 1600m at Moonee Valley on September 26th, followed by the Group I Caulfield Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield on October 11th, and then Saturday’s Group II AAMI Vase over 2040m.
This form puts him alongside Australia's other hot 3 year old, Samantha Miss.
