Rick Hore-Lacy has trained his first Group 1 winner in 6 years thanks to Toorak Toff's resounding victory in the Golden Rose on Saturday. It is the first time a Melbourne horse has won the race, with the exciting 3 year old powering down the outside to take the million dollar event.
Ridden by Damien Oliver, Toorak Toff ran down leader Squamosa to win by a half length with unlucky Ilovethiscity finishing in third place. There was just 1 1/2 lengths covering the first 6 horses past the line.
Pre-race favourite Masquerader started slowly and never got clear during the run, finishing seventh. Crystal Lily (winner of the Golden Slipper) came into some problems not long after the start, and never threatened at the business end of the race, finishing a poor 11th.
"He's the best horse I've had since Redoute's Choice", Hore-Lacy said of Toorak Toff after the race. That's a big call but one which will have people watching with interest, as the horse heads towards the Caulfield Guineas in October.
In the other Sydney Group race, Reward For Effort was an impressive 2 length winner in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes. The Peter Moody trained 4 year old took care of Winter King and Trusting as he moves forward for an exciting couple of months.
More Joyous also had a strong start to his Spring, winning the listed Sheraco Stakes from Girl Hussler and Sister Madly. Despite carrying 59kg, the Gai Waterhouse-trained More Joyous was too strong. He will target the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley as his grand final.
