Black Caviar Serves Them Up in the Schweppes

Hold on just a minute Hay List, you no longer have a stranglehold on the tag of Australia's best sprinter. The door is left open on that title now, after four-year old mare Black Caviar destroyed her rivals in the Group 2 Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The win sets up an exciting clash between the two speedstars on the last day of the Flemington Carnival, where they will be squaring off in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic. Black Caviar is undefeated in all 7 career runs, while Hay List has won 12 from 14 starts, including his last 4 all at group level.

Black Caviar jumped slowly from the gates in the Schweppes Stakes but gradually moved up the small field of six, sitting outside leader True Persuasian with about 500 metres to go. Once jockey Luke Nolan stepped on the gas, Black Caviar stormed away, winning easily by 5.5 lengths from second favourite Hot Danish.

Trainer Peter Moody was very happy with how the race panned out. "I said to Luke just sit on her for as long as you can, you've got the best turn off foot", Moody said. "Ride her as the best horse, whatever happens or unfolds then you're around the race."

"She doesn't know her own strength or her own brilliance and that's brought about her downfall a few times. Touch wood, we're two runs into a prep, this is the longest prep we've had so far, it would be lovely to get to Flemington in a couple of weeks and make it a three-run prep," he said.

When asked about the much anticipated match-up with Haylist in that upcoming race, Moody was optimistic but grounded. "He (Hay List) is an outstanding horse. We're undefeated and we've got to keep going forward."

David Hayes, trainer of fourth placed runner Eagle Falls will take his horse to the Salinger Stakes, thus avoiding the two sprint stars in their final Spring showdown. But he described the upcoming clash as "mouth-watering".

I think few would disagree.
