El Segundo firms as Cox favourite

Last year's Caufield Cup favourite El Segundo has come back stronger than ever this Spring, taking out the Underwood Stakes at Caufield last weekend, and reaffirming favouritism for next months Cox Plate.

Turning into the home straight, the Colin Little trained horse had his rivals covered, and stormed home to win comfortably. Jockey Darren Gauci was very impressed by his horse's effort and is very confident going into the $3 million WFA Cox Plate.

"I'm not underestimating any horse, but I'm not afraid to take anyone on with him. I've never ridden a horse that tries harder. He hates to be beaten".

David Hayes trained Polar Bear finished second behind El Segundo and will run in the Turnball Stakes at Flemington in 2 weeks. Third placed Molotov finished 3 lengths off the pace and will aim for the Caufield Cup, although he is not guaranteed a start.

El Segundo will have one more run before the Cox Plate, in the Yalumba Stakes at Caufield on October 14.
