Fields Creates Cox History

Nine-year old galloper Fields Of Omagh has created Cox Plate history by becoming the oldest horse to win the premier WFA event. It was one of the most exciting Australian races in recent memory, with the sentimental favourite edging out El Segundo and Pompeii Ruler in a photo finish.

Pompeii Ruler sat just behind the speed and raced to the lead on the final bend, looking very impressive in the home straight. But El Segundo and Fields of Omagh (who both came from the back of the field) loomed up at the 200 and and ran on strongly, with all three horses crossing the line together. The large Moonee Valley crowd cheered loudly as Fields of Omagh was awarded the win by a nose from El Segundo, with Pompeii Ruler a long neck further back.

Fields of Omagh has made the Cox Plate her own in recent years. She has competed in the last 5 which is a feat on its own, but her results make it even more remarkable. Two wins (2003, 2006), a second (2004), a third (2005) and a fifth (2002) are efforts that will ensure Fields of Omagh goes down in Moonee Valley and Australian racing history!

Jockey Craig Williams rode Fields perfectly, settling near the back of the field and timing his run to perfection. He said he was "always confident" but felt "fortunate and honoured" to ride the Cox Plate winner.

There were several other big races at Moonee Valley on a very successful Cox Plate day.
Zipping kept its Melbourne Cup dream alive with a win in the Moonee Valley Cup, while Efficient held off fast finishing The One to win the AAMI Vase and hold favouritism for next Saturday's Victoria Derby.
