      Serious Speed Wins 1000 Guineas

Serious Speed became the first late entry to win the 1000 Guineas, after taking out the $500,000 race on Wednesday against her more fancied competitors. The Leon Macdonald-trained fillie started at $16, but won by over 2 lengths from Extension of Time, with Antartic Miss holding on for third after leading most of the race.

Winning jockey Danny Nikolic was very confident mid-race, saying Serious Speed was "only jogging" and had a lot left in the tank at the turn. It was his second Group 1 of the Spring after riding long-shot Rubiscent to victory in the Underwood Stakes.

The three favourites were disappointing with Absolut Glam, Jestatune and Aracadia finishing in 5th, 11th and 13th out of the 14 horses that went around.

Serious Speed is now looking at nominating for the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes or paying the $55,000 late entry fee to get into the Group 1 VRC Oaks a few days later.
