Spheno-fighting towards Caufield Cup

Lee Freedman trained gelding Sphenophyta has shot to Caufield Cup favouritism after winning the Turnball Stakes at Flemington on the weekend. Ridden by Danny Nikolic, Sphenophyta was taken to the lead before the home turn, and held on to win in the straight ahead of another Freedman horse, Our Smoking Joe.

Sphenophyta goes into the Caufield Cup with only 50kg, but will carry 51kg on the day to allow Nickolic (who cannot make the weight) to stay on him.

The Turnball Stakes is a great guide to Spring Racing success, with superstars such as Makybe Diva, Elvstroem, Northerly and Sunline winning the race in 4 of the past 5 years. The other galloper to watch from this years race would have to be Zipping, another horse who's been running well.

Sphenophyta's talent did not come as a surprise to part owner and Hawthorn footabller Shane Crawford, who predicted it's future success on The Footy Show over a month ago. Sphenophyta, previously trained by Richard Otto in New Zealand, won the Ipswich Cup during his Queensland winter campaign before a group of Freedman's clients including Shane, and Mummify's part-owners John O'Neill and Mark Pegic bought an 80 per cent share.

According to Eskander.com, Sphenphyta is the clear Caufield Cup favourite at $3.80, with Zipping at $5.00 and Our Smoking Joe at $7.00. The next best are Serenade Rose (8.00), last year's winner Railings (11.00), Headturner (13.00) and Tawqeet (13.00).
