Tawq of the Town

US import Tawqeet has given trainer David Hayes his second Caulfield Cup victory by flashing home to win the $2.5 million race in front of a huge crowd at Caulfield on Saturday. Tawqeet was ridden beautifully by jockey Dwayne Dunn, who settled the horse midfield before accelerating past Aqua D'Amore in the straight.

The Gai Waterhouse filly bravely held on for second place with long-shot Japanese raider Delta Blues sneaking into third despite being caught wide throughout the race.

Tawqeet won the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney at his last start, a race that last year's Caulfield Cup winner Railings won in his lead-up race. Activation, who was runner up in the Metropolitan behind Tawqeet, finished an unlucky fourth in the Caulfield Cup, further strengthening the Metrop formlines.

Tawqeet is now a rated a good chance by many to win the Melbourne Cup, sharing favouritism with international superstar Yeats. Tawqeet's trainer David Hayes belives his galloper will be better over the two-mile journey of the Melbourne Cup, saying "he relaxes so well, he just switches off".

Among the other races of the day, Group Three Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) created the most interest, as it is a good Derby indicator (along with the AAMI Vase). The Norman Robinson was taken out by Get Square, the John O'Shea trained horse ridden by veteran jockey Darren Beadman.

The David Hayes trained Ulfah flashed home in the straight but couldn't quite get to Get Square, who was Beadman's second winner of the day. He also rode top weight Amitola to victory in the Skyy Blue Plate.
