Darley's Guelph Dominates Thousand Guineas

Team Darley have won their third 3yo Group 1 in a matter of days, with filly Guelph dominating her rivals to win the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Starting $1.45 favourite, there was some concern whether the Sydney form would measure up down south, but that was quickly put to bed, as Guelph led all the way and batttled strongly in the straight to hold off a fast finishing May's Dream and win by 1.5 lengths.

Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Gregers was 2 lengths further back in third, narrowly holding out Wordplay for the multiples.

Trainer Peter Snowden won the Caulfield Guineas and Spring Champion Stakes on Saturday and continued his domination of the 3 year old features with Guelph's victory. He also becomes the first trainer in nearly 20 years to win the Caulfield Guineas-Thousand Guineas double, the last to do so being the great Bart Cummings.

"She's a very, very good filly and she's got a great attitude to go with it," Snowden said. "She's a very gifted filly.

Her career earnings have now moved past the $1.6 million mark and has an imposing 7 from 11 wins.

Winning jockey Kerrin McKevoy bounced out of the gates and took his star filly to the lead from the start, dictating terms up front to give Guelph her fourth Group 1.

"I had a few scenarios in my head behind the barriers, but when she began well I thought I'll take the race by the scruff of the neck," McEvoy said.

The Melbourne weather served up some strong winds, which he was glad didn't wreake to much havoc to his mount."

"It's pretty arduous down that side, that wind is bloody strong and it does blow them off stride, even a big filly like her."

It's unlikely Guelph will press on to the Cox Plate, but Snowden stated it will be a team decision. His Caulfield Guineas winner, Long John, is an $11 chance in the Cox Plate, after connections announced they would proceed to the big WFA race.

The carnival stays at Caulfield this Saturday for Caulfield Cup day which also includes the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes, Group 2 Caulfield Sprint and six other black type races.
