Atlantic Jewel Cruises to 9 Straight

Classy mare Atlantic Jewel took another step towards champion status, winning her 9th straight race with an effortless victory in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Starting a Black Caviaresque $1.06 favourite, she settled fourth in running and at the 500 metre mark, put pay to her competitors in just a few strides, winning by 2 and a half lengths.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh described the 1600 metre run as a "nice track gallop" but was mindful that her "races won't get any easier from now on".

“She could run in the Underwood but I’ll wait and see. I’m really excited now. Our goal is the Cox Plate and we need to look at how best to get her there in the best shape,” Kavanagh said.

Racing fans would love to see her back up into the Underwood next weekend, in a dream matchup that would involve Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune, star import Jet Away and Green Moon to name just a few.

Atlantic Jewel's other option would be the Group 1 Turnball Stakes at Flemington on October 5.

Peaking for her Grand Final, the Cox Plate, will be the determining factor in her lead up races to the Moonee Valley extravaganza. She is currently a $3 favourite for that event.
