Fiorente Flies to Capture Dato

Melbourne Cup runnner up Fiorente has burst from the back of the field to claim an impressive victory in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley.

$35 outsider Spacecraft led coming around the last turn and kept finding in the straight. He led Fiorente by 3-4 lengths with 100 metres to go and an upset looked on the cards, but the Gai Waterhouse-trained 6 year old showed amazing acceleration to sneak home by 0.2 lengths.

Spacecraft hung on for second with French import Lidari running very strongly for third. Equal favourite Super Cool was one of the first runners off the bit and was struggling before the straight, but found again in the last few hundred metres and battled into fourth.

Waterhouse, who was up in Sydney for Golden Rose Day, thought her runner had no hope throughout the race.

"Honestly, when was he going to win the race?" she said moments after the victory.

"At no stage was he even a 5 to 1 chance, he was a 25 to 1 chance, and then he just grew...it was absolutely devastating".

Jockey Nash Rawiller had given up a promising card of rides in Sydney to be aboard Fiorente. And his horse didn't disappoint.

The strong finish was reminescent of the late burst that saw Fiorente almost win the Melbourne Cup last year. He will be targeting both the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup later in the Spring, with possibly the Underwood Stakes on his cards in 2 weeks time.

He is now a $10 chance for the Cox Plate and an $8 second favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

Himself, Puissance De Lune and It's A Dundeel are all given realistic chances of pulling off the elusive double.

It's going to be a hot Spring Carnival!
